The larger canopy catches proportionally more wind load, which has two practical implications. First, the mast and arm geometry are built to handle the additional stress of a 12m² canopy in Australian summer conditions — this isn't a 3×3m structure with a bigger piece of fabric attached. Second, base weight requirements increase meaningfully at this size, which leads directly to the ballasting section below.

At the 3×4m format, the lever-arm forces acting on the base are substantially greater than at 3×3m. A larger canopy surface, a longer arm, a greater moment at the foot — the physics compounds quickly, and the base weight requirements reflect that.

For a 3×4m cantilever umbrella in a sheltered suburban position: 100 kg minimum, no exceptions. In coastal, elevated, or fully exposed positions — the kind of spots that regularly see afternoon sea breezes or exposed southerly gusts — 120 kg is the correct starting point. At this size, adequate ballasting is not a matter of comfort or convenience, it's a structural safety requirement.
