The correct base depends on the umbrella type, pole diameter or cross-base dimensions, canopy size, installation surface and exposure. Always follow any minimum base-weight or anchoring instructions supplied with the umbrella.
A compatible pole diameter does not by itself confirm that a base is suitable or sufficiently weighted for a particular umbrella.
Centre-pole umbrellas require a base that accepts the exact pole diameter and is suitable for the umbrella's dimensions and installation conditions.
Before ordering, check:
Larger umbrellas or exposed locations may require a heavier base or an additional anchoring solution.
Cantilever umbrellas require a compatible cross-base ballast or anchoring system. A standard centre-pole base must not be used unless the umbrella manufacturer expressly confirms compatibility.
Before ordering a ballast kit, compare:
The Holdfast Kit is designed for compatible 100 x 100 cm cross bases and provides up to approximately 100 kg of added ballast when all four plates are fully filled with dry sand.
The Holdfast Kit adds ballast but does not make an umbrella windproof.
Use only the filling material specified in the product instructions. The Holdfast Kit is intended to be filled with dry sand.
Install the umbrella and base on a flat, stable surface. Check all fasteners and ballast components before opening the canopy.
Always close the canopy:
Do not leave an umbrella open to test whether a base is sufficiently weighted.
FAQ — Outdoor Umbrella Bases & Weights
Can I use the same base for a cantilever umbrella and a centre-pole umbrella?
Not unless the umbrella manufacturer expressly confirms compatibility. Centre-pole bases and cantilever cross-base ballast systems use different mounting configurations.
How do I know whether a base is compatible?
Check the umbrella type, pole diameter or cross-base dimensions, attachment method and any minimum base-weight or anchoring requirement stated in the umbrella instructions. Contact us before ordering if any of these details are unclear.
Does a heavier base make an umbrella windproof?
No. A heavier compatible base can provide additional support, but it does not make an umbrella windproof. Always close the canopy during strong or gusty winds and whenever the umbrella is left unattended.
Can I add extra weight to an existing base?
Only where the umbrella and base instructions allow it. Any additional weight must remain low, evenly distributed and securely positioned. Do not obstruct moving parts or exceed the installation limits of the umbrella, base or supporting surface.
Can I use water instead of sand in a fillable base?
Use only the filling material specified for the individual base. The Holdfast Kit is designed to be filled with dry sand. Do not fill it with water unless the supplied product instructions expressly permit it.
