    Measuring a Lounge or Poolside Setting

    This is the point at which the numbers usually become uncomfortable — a six-seat table wants roughly 3.9 m of canopy in its long dimension, which is more than most people expect. That gap between expectation and requirement is exactly why undersizing is so common.

    Shade does not sit still. Its position depends on the sun's elevation, and the lower the sun sits, the further the shaded zone slides away from directly beneath the canopy.

    Step 4: Match the Result to a Canopy Shape

    Two canopies with the same nominal size cover different amounts of ground depending on their shape. This is where a lot of sizing goes astray.

    Round Canopies

    Square Canopies

    Square canopies deliver the most ground coverage per nominal metre and align cleanly with square tables, modular lounges and evenly proportioned patios. Where the setting is roughly as deep as it is wide, a square canopy wastes the least shade.

    Rectangular Canopies

    Rectangular canopies place shade where long, narrow settings actually need it. A 3 × 4 m rectangular canopy covers 12 m² — a third more than a 3 × 3 m square — and it distributes that extra coverage along the axis of a dining table or a row of loungers rather than out to the sides where nobody is sitting.

    Step 5: Check the Clearances You Cannot See on a Product Page

    Three measurements decide whether a correctly sized canopy will physically work in your space. All three are easy to overlook and awkward to discover after delivery.

    Mast and Rotation Clearance

    On a cantilever umbrella, the mast sits outside the canopy — typically 40 to 60 cm beyond the canopy edge. That position needs clear floor space, and if you intend to use the rotation function, the canopy needs an unobstructed sweep around the mast through the full arc you plan to use.

    The requirement differs sharply by format. A market umbrella carries its load vertically down the pole, and when the pole passes through a table the table adds lateral stability, so a moderate base is typically sufficient.     Sizing a Shade Sail Instead

    Shade sails size differently, because two factors reduce ground coverage below the sail's nominal dimensions.

    The first is anchor offset. Anchor points sit outside the zone being covered, so the sail must be larger than the area you want shaded. Add at least 0.5 to 1 m to each dimension beyond the furniture footprint to allow for anchor placement.

    The second is installation pitch. A sail is installed with corners at differing heights so water runs off rather than pooling, and that tilt reduces the horizontal projection. A sail pitched at around 20° projects roughly 94% of its nominal dimension onto the ground; at 30°, around 87%. The steeper the pitch, the smaller the effective shade footprint.

    Five Sizing Mistakes Worth Avoiding

    1. Sizing to the tabletop. The tabletop is roughly half the area people actually occupy once chairs are pulled out. Measure the setting in use.
    2. Ignoring the shape difference. A 3 m round canopy covers about 21% less ground than a 3 × 3 m square. Nominal size alone does not tell you the coverage.
    3. Expecting size to solve sun angle. Late-afternoon shade moves several metres. Adjustability handles that; extra canopy does not.
