Retractable Awnings

Retractable awnings extend shade coverage across patios, decks and outdoor entertaining areas without a permanent overhead structure. Pull them out when the sun is up, retract them when the weather changes or the space is not in use.

What is a retractable awning and how does it work?

A retractable awning is a fabric canopy mounted to a wall or fascia above an outdoor area. The canopy extends outward on a folding arm mechanism to cover the space below, then retracts back against the wall when not in use. Most models in the Shadelys range operate via a crank handle or motor. When extended, the awning provides shade coverage over a patio, deck or alfresco area without requiring freestanding posts or a permanent overhead structure.

What size retractable awning do I need?

The right size depends on the width of the area you want to shade and the depth of coverage required from the wall outward. Measure the full width of the opening, wall or fascia where the awning will be mounted, then measure how far out from the wall you want shade to extend. Most outdoor dining and lounge settings require a projection of between two and four metres to provide meaningful coverage across the seating area. Refer to the dimensions listed on each product page for the specific width and projection of each model.

Are retractable awnings suitable for Australian conditions?

Retractable awnings are designed for use in normal outdoor conditions and provide effective shade and weather protection when correctly installed. Australian summers combine high UV exposure with significant wind events, particularly in coastal and elevated areas. All retractable awnings should be retracted during strong or gusty winds and whenever the awning is left unattended. Refer to the individual product page for fabric specifications and any stated UV-resistance or water-resistance ratings.

What is the difference between a retractable awning and a shade sail?

A retractable awning is mounted to a wall or fascia and extends outward on a fixed arm mechanism, providing a clean horizontal or angled shade plane directly in front of the mounting point. It retracts fully against the wall when not in use. A shade sail is a fabric panel tensioned between multiple fixed anchor points across an open space. Awnings are better suited to spaces directly adjacent to a building wall or fascia; shade sails are better suited to open garden areas, pool decks and spaces where no suitable wall mounting is available. Both are available in the Shadelys range.

FAQ — Shade Sails

How do I install a retractable awning?

Retractable awnings are mounted to a solid wall, fascia or structural beam above the area to be shaded. The mounting bracket must be fixed into solid masonry, timber framing or structural steel capable of bearing the weight of the awning and the load applied by wind on the extended canopy. Refer to the supplied installation instructions for the specific bracket type, fixing pattern and recommended fastener specifications for each model. If you are unsure whether your wall or fascia is suitable, consult a qualified installer or builder before proceeding.

Can a retractable awning be left extended overnight?

Retractable awnings are designed for active use rather than permanent deployment. Retract the awning during strong or gusty winds, heavy rain, whenever it is left unattended for extended periods, and at the end of each day where possible. Leaving an awning extended overnight in conditions that change unexpectedly - particularly in areas with morning wind events or sudden summer storms - increases the risk of fabric and mechanism damage. When in doubt, retract.

How do I clean and maintain a retractable awning?

The fabric canopy can be cleaned using a soft brush or cloth with mild soap and water. Allow the canopy to dry fully in the extended position before retracting - folding a damp canopy into the housing promotes mould and mildew growth in the fabric. The folding arm mechanism requires no regular lubrication under normal use; refer to the product instructions for any specific maintenance requirements. At the end of the outdoor season, retract the awning and protect it with a suitable cover where possible.

Will a retractable awning reduce UV exposure on my patio?

A retractable awning reduces direct overhead UV exposure beneath the extended canopy by blocking direct sunlight. The level of UV reduction depends on the fabric specification of the specific model - refer to the individual product page for stated UV-resistance ratings. Note that reflected and indirect UV radiation from surrounding surfaces can still reach the area beneath the canopy. For Australian conditions, combine well-positioned shade with the other sun protection measures recommended for the day.
