Waterproof Shade Sails

Waterproof shade sails give you shade on sunny days and cover when it rains, so you can use your patio, deck or pool area in all weather. Choose the shape, size and colour that fit your space, and hang your sail on a slope so rain runs straight off instead of pooling.

How a Shade Sail Works

A shade sail stretches between fixed anchor points, such as posts set in concrete, a solid wall or a structural beam, to create a tensioned canopy of fabric over your outdoor space. With no base and no pole in the middle, the area underneath stays completely free for your table, lounge or pool.

Hung with a slope, a shade sail sheds rain instead of letting it pool. How much rain it handles depends on the fabric: water-resistant sails cope with light showers, while waterproof sails are made to keep the rain off.

Fabric, UV Protection and Rain

Our shade sails are made from coated polyester fabrics chosen for the Australian sun. Each product page lists the exact fabric, its UV protection and whether the sail is water-resistant or waterproof.

A shade sail cuts direct sun, but light reflected from paving or pool water can still reach the area underneath. On high UV days, use it alongside hats and sunscreen, not instead of them.

Whatever the fabric, install your sail with a slope: about 1 m of drop for every 4 m of sail, with one or two corners higher than the others. Rain then runs off the low edge instead of pooling in the middle and loading the anchor points.

Choosing the Right Size and Shape

A rectangular shade sail gives even cover over a dining or lounge area and uses four anchor points. A triangular shade sail fits corners and irregular spaces with only three, and two or three triangles can be layered at different heights for a designed look.

Measure between your anchor points, not the area you want to shade, and allow at least 45 cm at every corner so the sail can be tensioned. Sizes are measured corner to corner and the edges are curved, so the shade on the ground is smaller than the nominal size, and it moves with the sun through the day.

Installation and Anchor Points

A shade sail is only as strong as its anchor points. Fix it to posts set in concrete, a brick or block wall, a roof bracket fixed into a rafter or a structural beam. Fascia boards, gutters, fences and balcony railings aren't built for the pull of a tensioned sail.

At each corner, a pad eye on the anchor point, a turnbuckle to tension the sail and a snap hook for quick removal give a taut, secure finish. You'll find them in our shade sail accessories.

Unclip your sail when strong or gusty wind is forecast, and when you're away for a few days. For sails over 20 m², we recommend a professional installer.

Shade Sail FAQ

Are shade sails waterproof?

It depends on the fabric. Water-resistant sails handle light rain, while waterproof sails are made to keep the rain off, and each product page tells you which one you're looking at. Either way, hang the sail on a slope so water runs off: hung flat, any sail will collect water.

What size shade sail do I need?

Measure the distance between your anchor points, not the area you want to shade. Then choose a sail at least 45 cm shorter than that distance at every corner, so there's room to tension it. Every product page has a size guide showing the anchor spacing each size needs. Not sure? Email a photo of your space to info@shadelys.com and we'll help you choose.

What can I attach a shade sail to?

Only to solid points: posts set in concrete, a brick or block wall with masonry anchors, a roof bracket fixed into a rafter, or a structural beam. Fascia boards, gutters, roof sheeting, fences and balcony railings can be damaged by the pull of a tensioned sail, especially in wind.

Is the fixing hardware included?

Every sail comes with stainless steel rings at the corners, ready to attach. Pad eyes, turnbuckles and snap hooks are sold separately: add a fixing kit when you order your sail for a bundle price, or use your own hardware on existing anchor points. Some models also include ropes, as shown on the product page.

Rectangle or triangle: which shade sail should I choose?

A rectangle covers more area for the same side length and suits long, straight spaces like a dining area, a deck or a pool edge. A triangle needs only three anchor points and fits corners and irregular spaces. For a large or awkward area, two overlapping triangles at different heights work well.

Can a shade sail handle Australian wind?

Fixed to solid anchor points and properly tensioned, a shade sail is made for everyday outdoor use. A tight sail flaps less and puts less shock on its fixings than a loose one. Unclip it when strong or gusty wind is forecast: with snap hooks on the corners, it only takes a few minutes.

Can I install a shade sail myself?

Yes, if your anchor points already exist and you're comfortable drilling into masonry or timber. Allow two people and an hour or two for most sails. If you need new posts set in concrete, or your sail is over 20 m², a local builder or shade installer will give a safer result.

Will it get hot under a shade sail?

Hang your sail high, ideally 2.4 m or more at the low corners, and keep the sides open so warm air can escape. Lighter colours reflect more of the sun's heat, while darker colours cut more glare. Position the sail slightly to the west of where you sit, so the late-afternoon shade lands on you.

Do I need council approval for a shade sail?

It depends on your council and on the sail's size, height and position. Small sails behind the front of the house are often exempt, but rules vary between states and councils. Check with your local council before installing, especially for large sails or anything in front of your home.

How long does delivery take, and can I return it?

Delivery is free Australia-wide, and you'll receive a tracking link by email as soon as your order ships. The estimated delivery time for each sail is shown on its product page. If it isn't right for your space, you have 14 days to change your mind and arrange an exchange or refund.

How do I look after my shade sail?

Hose it down now and then and use a soft brush with mild soapy water, avoiding pressure washers and harsh chemicals. Check the fixings and re-tension the sail at the start of each season. Take it down over winter and before storms, let it dry completely and store it somewhere dry.

Shade sail or cantilever umbrella: which is better?

A shade sail fixes to anchor points around your space, with no base or pole in the way, and suits courtyards, pools and larger areas. A cantilever umbrella stands on its own base, can be moved and rotated, and needs no drilling. Compare both in our guide to cantilever umbrellas, market umbrellas and shade sails.
