Product Details

Anthracite shade, fixed between four anchor points and drawn taut above the outdoor space below. The Dacron is a rectangular shade sail built for the outdoor areas where a standard umbrella runs out of reach — a pool deck that extends beyond any single canopy, a long alfresco dining area that needs continuous overhead coverage, or an open garden space where a permanent shade structure makes more sense than a portable one. PU coated oxford fabric, stainless steel corner fittings, PE ropes included. Available in multiple sizes to suit a wide range of outdoor spaces. A fixed shade solution designed for installation between suitable anchor points.

The PU coated oxford fabric delivers a level of technical performance that standard polyester canopies cannot match. The coating makes the fabric water resistant, mould-resistant and UV-protective — capable of handling light to moderate rainfall without saturating, resistant to the mould and mildew that humid Australian conditions promote in untreated outdoor fabrics, and helps reduce direct UV exposure beneath the canopy. The anthracite tone holds its depth through sustained sun exposure without bleaching, and absorbs rather than reflects harsh overhead glare, creating a cooler and more comfortable environment beneath the sail.

Four stainless steel triangular fasteners are integrated at each corner of the sail, providing the fixing points for the included PE ropes. Once the sail is anchored between four fixed points — structurally suitable fixed anchor points, such as purpose-built posts, appropriate wall fixings or suitable structural beams — the ropes connect the sail corners to the anchor hardware and allow basic tension adjustment. For precise tensioning and a clean, taut installation, pairing the Dacron with a compatible stainless steel fitting kit is recommended.

A rectangular shade sail for pools, alfresco areas and open garden spaces

The Dacron is available in multiple sizes — select the right coverage for your outdoor space using the size options above. The rectangular shape suits long tables and linear outdoor spaces where a triangular sail would leave corners exposed and a square sail would overhang the edges unevenly. Four anchor points, one at each corner, allow the sail to be tensioned symmetrically for a clean, flat installation.

The included PE ropes connect the sail corners to the anchor hardware at each fixing point. For best results, install two corners of the sail higher than the other two — this creates a slope across the canopy that allows rainwater to run off rather than pooling in the centre of the fabric.

Wall and post mounting hardware — pad eyes, carabiners and turnbuckles — is not included with the sail. The Shade Sail Fitting Kit Standard (4-point, stainless steel) is the compatible option for this rectangular sail.

A fixed shade solution for outdoor space

A shade sail occupies a different position in the outdoor space from an umbrella: it is fixed rather than portable, architectural rather than furniture, part of the structure of the outdoor room rather than an element within it. For outdoor spaces where permanent overhead shade makes more practical sense than a freestanding umbrella — a pool area where a base would occupy usable deck space, a long alfresco where a single umbrella leaves half the table uncovered, or a play area where shade needs to be consistent regardless of wind direction — the Dacron delivers coverage that a portable shade structure cannot.

The anthracite tone works across a wide range of outdoor settings. Against white render or pale limestone paving it reads as a deliberate architectural element; above dark hardwood or composite decking it creates tonal depth without heaviness; around a pool it absorbs glare rather than reflecting it, making the overall environment beneath the sail noticeably more comfortable through the harshest midday hours of the Australian summer.

At a glance

Rectangular shade sail, multiple sizes available. PU coated 100% polyester oxford fabric, anthracite. UV-protective, water resistant, mould-resistant. Stainless steel triangular fasteners at all 4 corners. PE ropes included. Mounting hardware not included — see the Shade Sail Fitting Kit Standard for compatible 4-point stainless steel hardware. For best water runoff, install two corners higher than the other two. The canopy is water resistant but not fully waterproof under heavy rainfall — treat with a waterproofing spray for additional protection in wet conditions.

Installation and Maintenance

Shade sails can be installed using the supplied instructions and included PE ropes. Identify your anchor points — posts, walls, trees or any solid structure — and secure the stainless steel corner fittings at each fixing point using compatible mounting hardware. Wall and post mounting hardware is not included with the sail.

Install two corners of the sail higher than the others to create a slope across the canopy — this allows rainwater to run off rather than pooling at the centre of the fabric. Ensure all anchor points are solid and capable of bearing the tension load before opening the sail fully.

The sail is not windproof. Remove or furl the sail during strong or gusty winds and whenever it is left unattended for extended periods.

The PU coated polyester fabric can be cleaned using a soft, damp cloth with mild soap. Allow the sail to dry completely before folding or storing. When not in use for extended periods — particularly through winter — remove the sail from its fixings, fold it clean and dry, and store it under cover where possible.

THE ART OF SHADE

PU Coated Oxford Fabric

UV-resistant, water resistant and mould-proof PU coated polyester fabric. Install two corners higher than the others to allow water runoff. Remove the sail during strong or gusty winds and whenever it is left unattended.

How to Install your Shade Sail

 Image

STEP 1

Plan your anchor points and select your hardware

Measure the area you want to cover and mark your anchor points on walls, posts or structures before purchasing. The number of anchor points matches the number of corners on your sail — three for a triangular sail, four for a rectangular sail. Each anchor point requires a pad eye, a carabiner and a turnbuckle.

When planning your installation, ensure at least two anchor points are set higher than the others to create a slope across the canopy. This slope — roughly 25% between the highest and lowest fixing points — allows rainwater to run off efficiently rather than pooling at the centre of the fabric.

STEP 2

Set tension and fix the corners

Anchor points must always align with the diagonal of the sail — for rectangular sails, one per corner; for triangular sails, one per point along the median lines. Allow a minimum of 45cm of clearance between each sail corner and its anchor point for adequate tensioning distance. The larger the sail, the more tensioning distance you should allow.

Once installed, the sail dimensions may vary slightly from the stated size due to fabric elasticity and the tension applied. This is normal and does not affect performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install a shade sail safely?

Use galvanised steel or aluminium posts, or fix to existing solid masonry walls and structural timber. Ensure every anchor point — whether a post, wall bracket or beam — is strong enough to bear the combined tension load of the sail in normal outdoor conditions. Stainless steel hardware throughout the fixing chain (pad eyes, carabiners, turnbuckles and ropes) is strongly recommended for Australian outdoor environments, particularly in coastal areas where other metals corrode rapidly.

Never fix a shade sail to flimsy fencing, guttering or structures that are not designed to carry a load. When in doubt, consult a qualified installer or builder before proceeding.

How do I choose the right shade sail colour?

All shade sails in the Shadelys range are available in multiple colours — choose the tone that best suits the furniture, flooring and finishes already present in your outdoor space.

Cream and white tones create a bright, open atmosphere and reflect some overhead heat, keeping the space beneath the sail cooler on the hottest days. Anthracite absorbs more light, creating a deeper, more defined shade that reduces glare effectively. As a general rule, darker tones appear to cast denser shade than lighter alternatives of the same fabric and size.

How do I choose the right size shade sail?

The right size depends on three factors: the area you want to cover, the distance between your available anchor points, and the shape of the space. Measure the zone you want to shade, then allow for the tensioning distance at each corner — a minimum of 45cm between each sail corner and its fixing point.

Rectangular sails suit long, linear spaces such as alfresco dining areas and pool decks. Triangular sails suit corner installations, L-shaped spaces and areas where one anchor point can be set significantly higher than the others to create a dramatic diagonal plane. All sails in the Shadelys range are available in multiple sizes — select your preferred size using the options on each product page.

Our sizing guide explains how to account for anchor offset and installation pitch when choosing a shade sail size.

Can I install a shade sail without drilling into walls?

Yes, in some situations. If drilling into walls is not possible, freestanding galvanised or powder-coated steel posts set into the ground or into weighted post bases are the most common alternative. Ensure any post used is rated to bear the tension load of the sail.

Clip-based or adhesive fixing methods are generally not adequate for shade sails, which carry significant tension and wind load in outdoor conditions. For a secure, long-term installation, mechanical fixings anchored into solid structures are always recommended.

What is PU coated oxford fabric?

PU (polyurethane) coated oxford fabric is a reinforced woven polyester with a polyurethane coating applied to one or both sides of the fabric. The coating makes the fabric water resistant, mould-proof and UV-protective — more durable and weather-resistant than standard uncoated polyester canopy fabric. All shade sails in the Shadelys range are made from PU coated oxford fabric for long-term outdoor performance in the Australian climate.

Are shade sails weather resistant?

Yes. All shade sails in the Shadelys range are made from UV-resistant, water resistant and mould-proof PU coated oxford fabric, designed to withstand normal Australian outdoor conditions across multiple seasons.

The fabric handles light to moderate rainfall without saturating. It is not fully waterproof under prolonged heavy rainfall — treating the fabric with a waterproofing spray at the start of each season adds an additional layer of protection where required.

Remove or furl the sail during strong winds, storms or extended periods of non-use. Storing the sail clean, dry and under cover through winter will significantly extend its service life.
