Full Description

Detailed Description

A triangular sail for corners, angles and spaces a rectangle can't reach. The Genoa is an anthracite triangular shade sail in PU-coated polyester Oxford fabric: UV-protective, water-resistant and mould-resistant. With three anchor points, it fits L-shaped patios, the corner between a wall and a tree, or the edge of a pool deck, and it unclips in minutes when the weather turns.

Why a triangle

  • Fits awkward spaces. Three solid anchor points are often easier to find than four.
  • A built-in slope. Set one corner higher than the other two and light rain runs off the low edge.
  • Easy to layer. Overlap two or three triangles at different heights to cover a bigger area with a designed look.
  • Made for the outdoors. UV-protective, mould-resistant fabric in anthracite, a tone that cuts glare and hides marks, with stainless steel D-rings on all three corners and three 1.5 m PE ropes in the box.

Sizing a triangle

Measure the three distances between your anchor points, and allow at least 45 cm at each corner for tensioning. Keep in mind that a triangle shades less than a rectangle with similar side lengths: the 5 x 7 x 7 m sail covers about 16.3 m². The size guide in the photos lists every size with its approximate shade area and the anchor spacing it needs.

Fixing hardware

The included ropes let you hang the sail on existing solid points. For a taut finish on walls or posts, add our Triangle Shade Sail Fixing Kit, made for three-corner sails. Where to fix it, how to tension it and how to care for it: see "Installation and Maintenance" below.

Before you buy

  • Water-resistant, not a roof: made for light rain, not heavy, sustained downpours.
  • Coated fabric catches more wind than shade mesh. Unclip it when strong wind is forecast or when you're away for a few days.
  • Dark colours absorb more heat than light ones. Hang it high, ideally 2.4 m or more at the low corners, so warm air can escape.
  • Need to cover a long, straight area? A rectangular sail like the anthracite one may suit you better.
  • Once tensioned, final dimensions can vary slightly due to fabric stretch.

Some products may be shipped directly from our partner vidaXL's warehouses.

Installation and Maintenance

Before you order, choose solid anchor points: steel posts set in concrete, a solid brick or block wall, a roof bracket screwed into a rafter, or a mature, healthy tree. Never fix to fascia boards, gutters, roof sheeting, fences or light poles: a tensioned sail pulls hard, especially in wind.

Measure the distance between your anchor points, not the area you want to shade. Allow at least 45 cm between each sail corner and its anchor point, so there's room to tension the fabric.

Fix a pad eye at each anchor point (fixing hardware is sold separately). Connect the corners with turnbuckles or snap hooks, or use the included PE ropes on existing solid points. Hang the sail on a slope, with the corners at different heights (about 1 m of drop for every 4 m of sail), so rain runs off instead of pooling. Tighten evenly until the fabric is taut, with no flat area in the middle, and re-check the tension after the first week.

Shade sails are not windproof. Unclip the sail when strong or gusty wind, storms or heavy rain are forecast, and when you're away for a few days.

To clean it, hose it down and use a soft brush or damp cloth with mild soapy water. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals, which can damage the coating. Let it dry completely before folding it. Over winter, take it down and store it clean, dry and under cover.

Delivery and Warranty

Delivery

Delivery is free Australia-wide. Each order is dispatched within 24 to 48 hours (excluding weekends and public holidays), then takes 4 to 6 business days to arrive, depending on your location. Expect your order within 5 to 8 business days in total, with a tracking link sent by email as soon as it ships.

Returns

You have 14 days from delivery to return your order if it isn't right for your space. Items must be unused and in their original packaging. See our Return and Refund Policy for details.

Warranty

Every product is covered by our 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use, such as faulty stitching, corner fasteners or fabric. Damage caused by storms, strong wind, incorrect installation or unsuitable anchor points isn't covered, which is why we recommend unclipping your sail when strong wind is forecast.

Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.

SUN AND RAIN, ON YOUR TERMS

PU-Coated Oxford Fabric

UV-protective, water-resistant and mould-resistant, with stainless steel D-rings at every corner. Hang it with one corner higher than the other two so rain runs off. Like every coated sail, it catches the wind: unclip it when strong wind is forecast or when you're away for a few days. With snap hooks, it only takes a few minutes.

SUN AND RAIN

Shade for the Sun, Cover for the Showers

Dense, coated Oxford fabric blocks direct sun and sheds light rain, so lunch outside doesn't end at the first sprinkle. Hang it on a slope and the water runs off the low corner, not into the middle.

WHERE IT WORKS

Patio, Pool, Driveway or That West-Facing Window

Over the outdoor table for long lunches, beside the pool, above the car on the driveway, or across a west-facing wall to stop the afternoon sun before it hits the glass. Tip: hang it slightly west of where you sit, so the late-afternoon shadow lands on you, not beside you.

FITS YOUR SPACE

Shade That Follows the Shape of Your Yard, Not the Other Way Around

Corners, driveways, pool edges, odd angles, our sails are cut to cover the space you actually have, without a centre pole getting in the way.

How to Install your Shade Sail

 Image

STEP 1

Choose solid anchor points, then measure between them

Pick 3 solid anchor points: steel posts set in concrete, a solid brick or block wall, a roof bracket screwed into a rafter, or a mature, healthy tree. Never fix to fascia boards, gutters, fences or light poles: a tensioned sail pulls hard, especially in wind.

Then measure the three distances between your anchor points. Choose a sail at least 45 cm shorter than each distance at every corner, so you have room to tension it. Plan one corner higher than the other two, with about 1 m of drop for every 4 m of sail, so rain runs off instead of pooling.

 Image

STEP 2

Fix the corners and tension the sail

Fix a pad eye at each anchor point. Connect the corners with the turnbuckles from the kit to tension the sail, and use a snap hook or the included rope where you want quick removal. Tighten evenly until the fabric is taut, with no flat area in the middle.

Re-check the tension after the first week, as the fabric settles. Once tensioned, final dimensions can vary slightly due to fabric stretch: this is normal.

 Image

STEP 3

Know when to take it down

Unclip the sail when strong wind, storms or heavy rain are forecast, and when you're away for a few days. Over winter, store it clean and fully dry.

Large sail or no solid anchor points? A local shade installer or handyman can fit posts for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's in the box, and do I need the fixing kit?

Every sail comes with stainless steel D-rings on all three corners and three 1.5 m PE ropes, so you can hang it straight away on existing solid anchor points. Pad eyes, turnbuckles and snap hooks aren't included: for a taut finish on walls or posts, add our Triangle Shade Sail Fixing Kit.

What size should I buy?

Measure the three distances between your anchor points, not the area you want to shade. Then choose a sail at least 45 cm shorter than each distance at every corner, so there's room to tension it. Keep in mind that a triangle shades less than a rectangle with similar side lengths: the size guide in the product photos shows the approximate shade area and anchor spacing for every size.

Should I choose a triangle or a rectangle?

A triangle fits corners and irregular spaces and only needs three anchor points. A rectangle covers more area for the same side length and suits long, straight spaces like a dining area or a driveway. For a large or awkward area, two overlapping triangles at different heights work well.

Can I attach it to my house, fence or a tree?

Only to solid points: a brick or block wall (with masonry anchors), a roof bracket fixed into a rafter, a steel post set in concrete, or a mature, healthy tree. Fascia boards, gutters, roof sheeting, fences and light poles aren't built for the pull of a tensioned sail and can be damaged in wind. Not sure? Email us a photo of your space.

Can I hang it without drilling?

Yes, if you already have solid anchor points: tie the included ropes around a mature tree or an existing post, or clip onto existing eye bolts. Avoid fences and light poles. For walls, you'll need to fix pad eyes.

Is it waterproof?

It's water-resistant. The PU-coated Oxford fabric sheds light rain when the sail is hung on a slope, so set one corner higher than the other two (about 1 m of drop for every 4 m of sail). It isn't a roof: in heavy, sustained rain, water can build up, so take it down when heavy rain is forecast.

Will it hold up in the wind?

Coated fabric doesn't let air through the way shade mesh does, so it catches more wind. Fixed to solid anchor points and properly tensioned, it's made for everyday outdoor use. Unclip it when strong or gusty wind is forecast, and when you're away for a few days. With snap hooks on the corners, it only takes a few minutes.

Will it get hot underneath?

Anthracite cuts glare and absorbs a little less heat than black, but more than white or cream. Coated fabric doesn't let warm air escape through it, so hang it high (ideally 2.4 m or more at the low corners) and keep the sides open so air can move underneath.

Which colour should I choose?

Black suits modern homes with dark frames, charcoal decking or white render, and hides marks well. White and cream reflect more heat and keep the space brighter. Anthracite sits in between.

Can I leave it up all year?

We recommend taking it down over winter and before storms. Hose it off, let it dry completely, fold it and store it somewhere dry. It will last longer.

How do I clean it?

Hose it down and use a soft brush with mild soapy water. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals, which can damage the coating. Let it dry completely before folding it away.

Do I need council approval?

It depends on your council and on the sail's size, height and position. Small sails behind the front of the house are often exempt (in NSW, for example, up to 20 m² and 3 m high), but rules vary between states and councils. Check with your local council before installing, especially for larger sails or anything in front of your home.

What's the warranty, and can I return it?

Every sail is covered by our 2-year warranty. If it isn't right for your space, you can return it within 14 days of delivery. See our Refund Policy for the details.
